A guide for the wood joinery buyer: Useful questions and answers

Author: LUCA Global Group • 2021

We set out to draft a guide designed to guide the buyer of wood joinery, by answering the most common questions in this regard. Thus, market orientation becomes easy, for the best choices.

  1. When is the time to look for joinery, if I am building a house?
The best time for looking for a solution, both for wood windows and wood doors, is immediately after obtaining the project from the architect/designer, in order to find the best option, both in terms of price and from a technical perspective. If the house is not new, from scratch and is a renovation process, the best time to look for the joinery solution is even before stripping the walls.
  2. When is the right time to install the wood joinery when building a house?
For installing the joinery, it would be best to install the pre-assembly frames, so that the installation can be performed after the completing the finishing. If it is not desired to install the pre-assembly frames, in order to facilitate the finishing, the windows can be installed in the wall holes after stripping the walls, before installing the thermal insulation system and the interior finishes. The latter option involves additional costs for the customer, to protect the joinery, by masking it with special film and PVC film for wood frames, but these should not be let on the frames for more than 72 hours.
  3. What is the best choice of a joinery solution that can provide a good soundproofing if I live in a noisy area?
A joinery manufacturer can provide various solutions for the glass, for any type of requirement. The glass used for soundproofing is a duplex-type exterior glass, more precisely two sheets of glass glued together by a PVB film, thus resulting a glass that is secure and also provides soundproofing. A basic package for soundproofing includes this package of 2 outer 4mm sheets of glass, an argon cavity inside of at least 16 mm and another 4 mm glass sheet inside. It can provide soundproofing of up to 34 db.
  4. What is the best choice from a thermal point of view?
From a thermal point of view, the solution depends both on the choice of the wood essence the frames and sashes are made of, as well as the glass with which the joinery is equipped. We cannot discuss the best choice, as there are many factors affecting the choice of the best solution, from the budget of each beneficiary, to preferences in terms of glass, wood essence, the area where the building is located, house insulation, etc. But we can talk about the best wood essence in terms of heat transfer coefficient, namely the soft essence. It is ideal as it is affordable in terms of costs, but it also relatively good thermal properties. In terms of glass, the best choice is a Trypan glass, with a minimum thickness of 36 mm.
  5. What is the process from sending the request until the delivery of the joinery?
Immediately after receiving the request, the supplier starts to calculate the raw materials, equipment (glass, hardware, gaskets, other secondary elements), working hours, labour, paints, etc., after which it calculates both the price of joinery and the execution time. After the completion of the joinery, the beneficiary is notified the estimated period of completion of manufacturing and the possible times for agreeing on the assembly.
  6. Can I see how my joinery is manufactured?
In the near future, LUCA will design a space for customers, who can follow part of the manufacturing process of the ordered wood joinery. The last stage before the joinery leaves the factory will be carried out in the assembly area. In this stage, the hardware and the glass with which the joinery is equipped are mounted, packed and loaded for shipping. In reverse order of the manufacturing process, before this procedure, the joinery enters the painting room, in a closed room with a controlled temperature level. We call this stage the joinery finishing – and it is probably the most important for the aesthetics of the final product.
  7. Delivery and installation
The delivery and installation are performed by a LUCA team leaving the factory directly to the customer; the joinery is carefully unloaded and installed by qualified staff.
  8. Quality control
Each joinery part is carefully inspected in terms of compliance and quality, so as to be complaint with the LUCA standards. For each nonconformity, the part returns to manufacturing for remediation.
  9. Maintenance and warranty of the works
LUCA ensures the warranty for the executed works for various periods of time, between 2 and 5 years, and it ensures the maintenance of the wood joinery on the beneficiary’s request.

In accordance with the European standards, LUCA has obtained the first three certifications applicable to our business activity:
